Canvas Outage & Security Notice
We have been notified of a nationwide data security incident involving Instructure, the provider of our Canvas learning management system (LMS). We are monitoring the situation closely. Here is what we know right now.
What We Know
- Canvas is currently down for all institutions nationwide.
- Instructure has confirmed that an unauthorized third party accessed certain Canvas data. Their investigation is ongoing.
- NWTC systems and network have not been compromised.
What Data Was Accessed?
There is currently no indication that passwords, dates of birth, financial information, or government identifiers were involved.However, there is indication that the following information was obtained:
- User details such as full name, NWTC ID, and email address
- Communication content within Canvas, such as messages between students and instructors
Recommended Next Steps
There is an increased possibility you may receive suspicious communications related to Canvas via email, Teams, phone call, or text message. Please take the following steps:
- Contact your instructor with any course-related questions.
- Use the reporting tools in Outlook and Microsoft Teams to report suspicious emails or messages.
- Contact the NWTC Student Help Desk to report suspicious phone calls, communications, or text messages.
- Do not click links or download attachments from unfamiliar messages.
General Security Reminders
- NWTC and Canvas will never ask for your password, MFA codes, or to approve a login via email, Teams message, text message, or phone call.
- NWTC staff will never ask students for remote access to a personal device.
- Never share your password, PIN, or MFA code with anyone.
